AEO vs agent experience: what's the difference for your business?

How agent experience is different from AEO platforms, in plain words, with a simple comparison.

The short of it

AEO gets you surfaced: your brand shows up in AI answers. Agent experience gets you converted: a customer's agent that arrives on your site can read it, get in and finish the booking, sign-up or purchase. You can do well on the first and still lose the second.

What does an AEO platform do?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. An AEO platform tracks and improves how a brand appears in AI answers: which prompts mention you, which sources the answer cites, and how that changes over time.

That is the find step. It tells you whether an assistant names you when a customer asks a question. It does not, on its own, tell you what happens when the customer's agent then visits your site to do something.

What is agent experience?

Agent experience is how agents experience your business once they arrive. This site groups it into five areas: can agents find you, read you, act on your site, pay, and can they be trusted, and trust you.

The question is practical: can a customer's agent see your prices and policies as text, get past your bot rules, and finish the task the customer gave it. The self-check asks 18 questions across those five areas.

Why do AEO results keep changing?

AI answers are generated per request. The same question can come back with different wording and different sources, and the answers shift again when the underlying models are updated.

That is why AEO tools re-run the same prompts on a schedule and report the trend rather than a single result. Scrunch's Core plan, for example, lists 125 prompts and 5,000 responses a month (Scrunch pricing, read 2026-10-18).

Can my brand appear in AI answers and still lose the sale?

Yes. Being named in an answer only gets the customer's agent to your door. Here are plain examples of where it can stop:

  • Prices that only appear after scripts run, so the agent reads a page with no price on it.
  • Bot protection that turns agents away before they see a single page.
  • A booking form that only a person can fill in.
  • A checkout that needs a human step, such as a puzzle or a confirmation only a person can give.

Which kind of tool is which?

A short guide to the tools named on this site, grouped by what they do. Details and sources are on tools that check.

  • Agent experience. ora.ai: discovery, access, usability and payments. Its checks fit SaaS and brand sites.
  • Closest comparison. Scrunch: how a brand appears in AI answers, plus AI-optimized pages for agents on its Enterprise plan.
  • Bot and agent security (DataDome). Decides which agents get in and blocks fraud.
  • Publisher tools. TollBit, built mainly for publishers to control and charge for AI access; its site also lists brand and commerce offerings. Axioma: publisher-side access rules and monetization.
  • Developer tools. 514.ax: runs coding agents to see whether they find and use a developer product.
  • AEO platforms. For example Profound: how a brand shows up in AI answers and which AI crawlers visit.

ora.ai is an agent experience platform, not an AEO tool.

Common questions

Is agent experience a replacement for AEO?
No. They answer different questions. AEO tells you whether AI answers mention you; agent experience tells you whether a customer's agent can finish the task once it reaches your site. Many businesses will want to know both.
Why does an AEO result change when nothing on my site changed?
Because AI answers are generated per request and models are updated. The same prompt can return different wording and sources from one run to the next, which is why AEO tools re-run prompts on a schedule.
Where do I start with agent experience?
Take the self-check. It asks 18 questions across find, read, act, pay and trust, scores your own answers in your browser, and points you to the questions to take to your web team.
